Default Dash is alive but everything else isn't

Well, I've started to look at the newly arrived WR which has been sat for five years. It doesn't like to start and when it does, it's a bit on the lumpy side so, tonight, I started making enquiries under the bonnet etc.

Battery - Charged and connections tight.
Fuel - there is some and it's moving because I can smell it from the exhaust
Spark plugs - removed, cleaned and replaced
Distributor - cap and rotor checked and cleaned
Airbox - all OK (I'd forgotten how much of a pig this is to remove)

There was a lot of crud on the rotor arm and lots of fuses/relays were oxidised so I thought that, after a good clean-up, I may have resolved the lumpiness.

It certainly seemed like everything was going in the right direction and then.....

Dash lights up but none of the lower red/amber lights come on.

It sounds like there is no spark at all now. All the green LED stuff is working (and the dash bulbs for the oddometer etc) but there are no ABS/battery/oil lights, no battery voltage / oil temp lights and no 'clickity-click' from the relay.

What have I done?

Don't suppose anyones got any pointers have they?

This is in the WR specific section of the forum so no 'off-topic' or 'general banter' is going to help here I'm afraid.

To summarise, it was all working until I touched it.........

When I turned-on the ignition, I had 4 red/amber lights in the bottom left and a couple in the bottom right. My Voltage and Oil temp lamps lit, there were clicks from the relays and the fuel pump ran if I tried to start the engine.

Now, I have a dash which lights up with green LEDs only and everything else is dead. The engine turns but there appears to be no spark. It's as if my battery is connected to my LED dash and starter motor only.

My own guess is the ignition switch or the damned after-market immobiliser....... I'd love to remove it but I've had a look at the cable splicing in there and I think it might be the lesser of two evils to leave it in place.

Perhaps it's time for a 2nd class return from/to Sheffield........

No imobilizer would mess with the lamps in the cluster so you must have moved/touched something (i.e. a wire or connector) that would cause the problem.

As I see it you have two alternatives... 1: clean every single spade/shoe in the loom or 2: get your hand up behind the dash and start tapping wires until something start to light up..

A simple voltmeter would also do the trick. Start out with one of the faulty lamps and work your way backwards until you find "a live wire"..

My guess would be a corroded/faulty connection in the fuse/relay box.

Just check that the 10 bulbs are actually physically present in the dash unit........
About half of the bulbs are common earth, and about half are common fed. I can imagine half therefore not working, but not all of them...........
You can check the wiring diagrams to identify which category which bulb falls into. See the wiring diagrams folder on the DVD that I did....
Most of the bulbs will not light even at start up, it will depend what they are signifying........

They are there and they were all working until about 9pm last night.

All dash ignition/warning lamps, diff-lock panel lamps etc have stopped coming on at the same time so it's something I've done.

As stated, everything was fine before 9pm. Now, I have a working green dash and starter motor only. It's almost like the ignition switch is giving power to the dash and starter but nothing else. The starter runs on key position III and the dash goes out at this point but the engine has no spark at all.

Will investigate the ignition switch next I think..........
