The frappr count is now upto 20. Audivw and myself had a similar conversation (at his mini-meet the other week) as to how it would be easier to organise a local meeting and possibly send out a PM to all forum members in that vacinity.

A example would be the up-coming Roger Albert Clarke rally this autumn. It has a full days stage in sheffield/surrounding area, So in essence you could click on sheffield on the frappr map and note all who are around south yorkshire/North notts and Derbyshire and send an invite that would possibly be of interest and local to them.

Im not in anyway suggesting we bypass the events and meetings section on the forum as i see frappr as an additional aid to organising and finding out possible numbers for future local meets.

One of the tenets of the forum is "no closed groups".

If it seems that the forum is being used to restrict information for whatever reason to "those who need to know" then I will discuss it with Robin.

There are many occasions when transients turn up in other areas, in some cases bending their schedules gently to fit something in. Martyn Sloman's Sheffield visits (from Weston-Super-Mare) come to mind, and Ian up in Scotland An additional twist is that you every now and then get to see a stranger.

Keeping the info up to date will be the hardest thing for this page but none the less its a great page to view and have on the forum and the more quattros that are added the better, maybe if the owners details were optional then this may reduce the objections and encourage more to sign up?

Maybe a mailshot to all quattro owners registered here, requesting their participation in this page would increase everyones awareness of it and why it is a good idea, and they don't have to join if they don't want to.

ps Martin, i see you've got some of that helium stuff in your rear tyres again!
Stuart, yes, the helium is in the tyres again.

Going of thread slighty the "chav" over the road from me who has a dayglow orange focus with a "bad ass" body kit has now added a great big Nitrous Oxide sticker on its tall gate.

At least I know the car is running on it as it must have a leek somewhere, because every time he drives up the road I can't help Pi**ing my self laughing

I still regard this as an attempt to exploit the forum to create private enclaves. As such, I'm very uncomfortable with it.

I'm sure the intentions are honourable, but I'm with Phil on this one, having been involved (to a lesser or greater extent) with Audi Clubs for nearly 20 years, it's this 'perceived' (and it only has to be perceived) feeling of exclusion that will cause their ultimate failure.

It's exactly what happened to the very original quattro mailing list run by Dan Simoes and Brett Dikeman in the USA. First there was a quattro list - then a Type 44 list broke off from it, then an S-cars list, then a North-East list.

It take a positive effort to check lists - it's a "pull" rather than a "push" transaction. There are only so many lists or fora any one person has the time to check each day - I run through about five Usenet groups, the IBM mainframe mailing list, the quattro forum, etc.

I',m _NOT_ going to look at a Yorkshire forum, a Derbyshire forum, etc., because I simply don't have the time. There's more than enough scope for local activities to be announced in Events and Meetings and I see external local groups as highly divisive and undermining our efforts here.

I don't think anyone is trying to create a "private enclave" or a regional forum. We haven't got a big enough "membership" in the first place to make branching out into smaller groups worthwhile. But if someone wanted to, who are we to stop them?,
I think it's just a handy (and interesting) map of where people are based in the country with some pictures of their cars. I think you'd only look at it occasionaly, as a tool, if you wonderd who was in the area you were going to
For instance, you might need a part ferryed up from somewhere and you would make a request on the forum, and then be able to plot the route.
There's all sorts of uses, without creating any sort of restricted group from it. I don't think theres many here who are that organised.
Why not leave it on for a week, so people know about it, and then delete the thread?
ps isn't the healthy debate on this forum great?!

Why do you think it's still there?

> ps isn't the healthy debate on this forum great?!

The delta is that the threadmanglers are known by name and colour code and can be challenged by anyone at any time.

Canopus on Compuserve - sadly defunct for unrelated reasons - proved to me that the health of a forum is ultimately the responsibility of the threadmanglers.

FWIW - whenever any of us mangles, everything we do is logged in a file Bruce can read and many operations force us to give reasons for our actions that Bruce can see. Most actions are ultimately reversible should Bruce (or another threadmangler) decide that's appropriate.

A word of caution - even if you delete one of your own posts, the threadmanglers can still retrieve it - just as we can each retrieve and reinstate posts that other threadmanglers have deleted.
