Is there such a thing as a bargain with these things? It's not what they cost to buy that's the problem! As for the colour, I thought it was Zermatt but I'm being told it's a champagne colour. My first quattro was Zermatt and it certainly seemed to be more silver than gold. This one has much more of a bronze effect to the silver. Was there more than one colour of silver offered when they came out? I can't remember myself......

The elusive WR rear cut that is hiding somewhere around my area is a very light gold that I would describe as "champagne" (my GM Torana was colour coded "champagne" and very similar). I have seen the doors (yet to collect them) and yes, it's very light gold.

Oh, its also been looked after by a certain Mr Payne for a lot of years - but not the one in Sheffield. The 'other' Mr Payne was apparently a works mechanic....
That will be Ralph Payne. He used to have a unit at Rosyth. Not sure if he's still there.

Zermatt was the only silver colour available from the 83 Model Year (Y Plate) until the last of the MB models (89 Model Year G Plate). Diamond Silver was on the early quad lamp cars from launch until very early Y Reg (82 Model Year). Crystal Silver was available on the RR 20V models exclusively. Hope this helps.

I would be inclined to try some cellulose thinners. Too much rubbing pressure and it might take off the black, but I'd try a light rub with it. If the paint hasn't been on for long, it'll probably wipe straight off.
It might be tricky if it's properly painted and fully hardened though, rather than a bit of overspray.

4 year old paint.. Alpine White.. Thinner no good.. So I tried the second best, heat.. No good either.. The serialnumber and the VIN number are now visible, which I need for MOT, the rest they can look up in their book

In hindsight I should have given the assignment to a conservator of paintings.. I just don't know any..

I just don't get it.. It's so simple to cover with tape or drill out the two rivets before painting.. Some people just work with their head up their ar*e

Now, if only I could get a replacement from Audi...

Is there such a thing as a bargain? Well John my interpretation of a bargain in this case is enjoyment vs money.Looking at these pictures with not to much outlay and some TLC that car looks like there is a lot of enjoyment per £. On the other hand if i did not like the quattro or knew what it was, i would probably think {as my mother did}that it was bonkers to spend all that money on an old car.By the way my mother does think her Nissan X trail is a bargain,i dont.It costs her £15000 every 3yrs on depreciation alone. Now,i think that is not a bargain.

You can i believe, providing you have logbook, and substantial proof you own that vehicle with that original Vin Plate....
