at the time I was 5 years old, and very jealous of my cousins poster of Hannu Mikkola jumping over a crest in the 1000 Lakes Rally.

Cheers,

I never like the Sex Pistols when they came out but I find their 'music' oddly enjoyable these days.

For me, it's Ultravox, Simple Minds, U2, Depeche Mode, OMD, Duran-Duran, Visage etc. Almost anything from the early 80's.

Oh, he's a new romantic :P Don't worry John, I have all of those on vinyl in my hall cupboard but there's equally as many Sex Pistols, XRay Specs, Ramones, Saints, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, etc... and that's just the late 70's ~ early 80's. The older I get, the more I appreciate what the Pistols (and the Ramones and the Saints) did for music! For all their rawness and crudeness, they were actually a tight outfit but when Glen Matlock left, they were nothing more than a joke, Sid being the punchline.

Now there's a supplementary question to this thread... Can you remember what music you were in to when you first heard about quattro?

For me it would have been punk and new wave... Simple Minds and Psychedelic Furs, New Order and Luv's è Blur

No one mentioned it, I guess it must be one of those geographical things; I got into knowing something about the quattro when Scalextric released its model; like all people of my age (in my country), we got to know more about racing cars trough Scalextric and the details in theyr catalogues than trough any other "media"... because that's what we could afford at the time!

Media coverage of WRC was poor by the way, there wasn't even a round of it down here.. generally speaking the "outside world" didn't exist in Spain until well into the 80s, but as far as WRC is concerned, there was little or nothing before Sainz (there was a decent representation in the european championship though, but it never attracted significant media coverage)

A couple of official Seats made it trough to 3rd and 4th in a Monte, though, wich was quite an achievement considering the circounstances.

As per my ur-q, it was one of the very first ones to ever reach here, and was actually owned by an Audi 'stealer' for surprisingly long. Can't remeber the date, though....

P.S.: Oh BTW, I'm 35, so I was probably barely able to spell "quattro" at the time...

I was at Primary School when the quattro first appeared and lucky enough to be driven (by my mum) to Castle Combe to watch a stage of the RAC in about 1983ish. That was back in the day when the RAC travelled the length and breadth of the country. I miss those days....
Just looked up the stats for this rally-from the rallybase website
2231 km including 790 km over 57 special stages.
That's what I call a proper event!

I was 6 in 1980. My first memory of the quattro was in a super car calendar I was given when I was about 8. I remember being quite intrigued by the beefy square look of the quattro compared to the other cars in the calendar, and could not figure out why it was called quattro at the time when the blurb said it had 5 cylinders!

1980. Learnt to drive in the brand new Mk3 Escort FWD.........What an innovation!.......Was'nt that impressed with it though after being brought up on a diet of Messers Vatanen, Mikkola and Waldegard!!.... so after I passed my test I went out and redressed the balance, with a White MK1 Mexico, minter......£750!!!!!....Treated it to a set of Monte Carlo 4 pots a la Sport quattro...The price?....£300 for two calipers, a pair of new, 10/4 inch Vented Discs and a pair of Bilstein Macpherson Struts. ........Oh how times have changed!!!!!
