Default Laquer Question

Folks, as part of my restoration I'm fitting new wings and i want to protect the lip at the rear of the front arch where all the stones come up and chip it, leading to rust.

I remember Roger Galvin once talking about a clear laquer that was applied to Helecopter Blades that went really hard and thus protected them from damage.

Does anyone know what this stuff is and where I could get some? Or, does anyone know or recommend an alternative / equivelent clear laquer that would protect these exposed areas. I actually intend to apply something like this to all the lip edges of all arches.

Thanks in advance!

It's helicopter blade tape. It's a tough, clear self adhesive tape used on the leading edge of helicopter blades. Some car manufacturers fit it to exposed areas from new - I know Porsche does.

Like this stuff:-

Helicopter Bike Frame Protection Tape **50mm x 2m** on eBay (end time 22-Feb-10 22:34:10 GMT)

3M have something called Scotchguard Paint Protection Film.

A rather harsh test -> 3M Protective Film Clear Bra Test - Automotive Articles .com Magazine

!
What I can say is that modern two pack lacquer dries to a very hard finish. (look how hard it is to scratch painwork on modern cars) It may therefore be possible to utilise a 2K lacquer and get the result you seek. I don't think laquer as good as today's was available to Audi when the cars rolled down the production line, this may be the reason for the use of tape?

That's a bummer! I have first hand experience that trees cause large and unsightly marks on the paint work when you hit them
