I tried swapping it for the fog light relay from position 1 but still no dash. On closer inspection the 2 relays have the same internal layout but the external contact blades on the foglight relay were to small/thin to make contact inside the fusebox.
I measured voltage at the fuse box connections with the relay removed with both the ignition on and off and found I was getting permanant (working) 12v to blade 30 plus the additional energising voltage at blade 86 when the ignition was turned on which is what I suspected I should be getting. I connected the relay to an external 12v supplyto test it, +tive to blade 86, -tive to blade 85 but could feel no clicking or repsonse from the relay, so I wound the voltage up to 20 volts and the relay gave in and decided to energise. After another 10 or so cycles of 20 volts on and off it decided it would be happy to be powered by 12 volts again. Relay back in the fusebox, ignition on, full working dash ![]() Obviously the relay was a bit tired after the winters inactivity (and possibly 24 years of use) so I guess I should put a repalcement onto the spares list.
