Default Body Roll

I would like to reduce the body roll of my car. Please hear me out on this one.

A year ago all subframe mountings, suspension bushes etc were replaced and a full set of Koni Sport dampers were fitted by Pete Berry.

At the time I was unsure of using Alluminium mounts etc and polybushes but decided OE would be fine (pete did use S2 wishbone bushes which apparantly are made of sterner stuff).

It drives well, but despite this it still seems to yaw and roll more than I would like, particularly at the back. It's ok once set into a corner but there does seem to be excessive roll and this can be a little unsettleing when switching steering inputs.

I appeciate being too firm can be counterproductive, there seems to be plenty of mechanical grip but too much roll with it. I have standard 8J Ronals with fresh 215 Dunlops. When I take her out it's just to really drive it where possible so would like to make it sharper.

I was thinking about fitting H&R springs as a solution? Any tips?

Hi,

I used to run koni sport dampers with h&r springs and had a fair bit of body roll - i now run billstein sport dampers and eibach spings as coilovers with pro mounts, this is very firm but has really sharpened up the handling.

Very hard on the road - great on track!,

Regards

Andy

The H+R springs do reduce roll quite well, but they are more track day than race track. You may want to drive another car that has the Koni, H+R and Super Flex bushes to compare to yours. It makes quite a difference over the standard set up.

You mention too much yaw - this is not really spring related, it's more to do with balance and geometry. I would not describe the quattro as having negative handling traits caused by a lack of yaw control.

If you meant too much pitching (fore and aft), this does happen on the standard quattro springs and dampers. If it is happening with the Konis, then try firming the fronts up a 1/4 of a turn and the rears 1/2 a turn - assuming you set the rears at about 65% and fronts at 50% to begin with.

In fact, if you are having too much roll when you change direction abruptly, then I would recommend the H+R springs. This movement has been almost totally eliminated on mine, which has the H+R and Koni. I think this is helped also by the fact that it sits 40mm lower.

If you want your quattro to handle ultra sharply, then have some 400lb lowering springs made, fit a rear ARB (Whiteline S2 version) and fit the Bilstein Sport dampers - and a full set of Super Flex bushes - then have the geometry set correctly.
